Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy is a revered Buddhist site housing a relic of the Buddha, symbolizing peace and spirituality in Sri Lanka.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

Nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka's cultural capital, Kandy, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - known locally as Sri Dalada Maligawa - is one of the most revered Buddhist temples in the world. This ancient and sacred site is home to a relic of Lord Buddha's left canine tooth, enshrined in a heavily guarded chamber within the temple complex. For centuries, this relic has played a significant role in the island's spiritual and political history.

The temple is located beside the scenic Kandy Lake and is part of the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy. Its architecture reflects the traditional Kandyan style, featuring beautifully carved wooden pillars, golden rooftops, intricate murals, and a peaceful spiritual atmosphere. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temple not only represents deep religious importance but also preserves a unique cultural and architectural legacy.

The relic was brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century from India and became a symbol of sovereignty, believed to grant the divine right to rule. As a result, the temple has been closely linked with Sri Lankan kings and national heritage for generations. Pilgrims from across the island visit the site regularly, especially on Poya (full moon) days and during Buddhist festivals.

Inside the temple, visitors can observe daily rituals, known as Thevava, conducted three times a day - morning, midday, and evening. These ceremonies include drumming, conch blowing, and floral offerings, creating a deeply moving spiritual experience. Although the relic itself is not shown to the public, it is kept in a golden casket shaped like a stupa, displayed in a special shrine room known as the "Relic Chamber."

Every year, the temple becomes the focal point of the Esala Perahera, one of Asia's oldest and grandest religious festivals. The streets of Kandy come alive with traditional dancers, whip crackers, fire performers, and more than 50 elaborately adorned elephants. The highlight of the procession is the moment when the sacred casket symbolizing the Tooth Relic is carried through the city on the back of the lead tusker. This multi-day spectacle attracts thousands of spectators and is a highlight of Sri Lanka's cultural calendar.

Travelers visiting the temple should dress respectfully - shoulders and knees covered - and remove footwear before entering. While the temple is open daily, visiting early in the morning or during the evening rituals offers the most serene experience. A quiet walk around Kandy Lake and a visit to the nearby museums and gardens can perfectly complement your temple visit.
